Ongoing Research
Parent-Child InterviewsThis research focuses on a panel of interviews with parents and their children in Davis, CA, which began when the children were 9 years old. These interviews focus on the children's bicycling attitudes and behavior over time. The fourth round of interviews with the panel of children, now aged 17, was conducted in the summer of 2017, and we will be studying how the children's bicycling attitudes may have shifted after the age of legal driver's licensing.

UC Davis Campus Travel Survey Panel Study How do students' bicycling attitudes, skills, and knowledge change across the course of their time at UC Davis? This study seeks to answer that question through the use of panel data from the UC Davis Campus Travel Survey. This will contribute to our understanding of how personal travel experiences ("mobility biography") can influence skills, knowledge, and attitudes that individuals acquire, with potential long-term influences on future travel behavior. This manuscript is currently under review for publication.

Bicycling to School Encouragement Efforts in Davis, CAThe city of Davis, CA is well known as the bicycling capital of the US, thanks to its extensive bicycling infrastructure and high rates of bicycling among adults and children. Depending on the particular school and the children's age, Davis primary schools achieve bicycling mode shares from 10 to 50%. Nevertheless, the city of Davis has still loftier goals for active school travel, and has implemented a number of encouragement efforts in recent years: the Active4.me scanning program and its associated Monkey Money incentive system in addition to the celebration of national Bike-to-School Day. With Rachel Hartsough at the city of Davis, I analyzed a decade of bicycle rack counts to evaluate the influence of these three encouragement efforts on overall rates of bicycling to school. Our research was presented at the 96th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board and is currently under review for publication.
